Into Kentucky and the Bourbon Craft Trail!!!!! Silver Trail Distillery. October 2013

We made our way out of Tennessee. Via Paris, you can get confused here.

And into Kentucky.

Just what you need a map ...
Now we can follow the Bourbon Trail.

Silver Trail Distillery a small Artisan distillery.
The truck belonged to the father of the Master Distiller, Spencer.

This small out building is the Distillery!

Spencers father was an illegal Moonshiner and the truck was used to transport it. He was chased by the Government Agents but not caught.  It was great hearing the history first hand - Spencer said its harder work making legal moonshine  - too much paperwork!!

Jay spent an incredible amount of time explaining the process and how things worked.  This is the production area, there are 2 small stills which produce all their output.

A Flat bed Still is unusual, the only one we saw, most stills are pot shaped like the one Jay is standing next to. The flat bed still was made by an original moonshiner, he was 86 when he made it, all hand beaten, they use dough to seal the 'chimney' while cooking, if you look carefully you can see where they chip it off after the moonshine is done

The barrels are where the steam is cooled by cold water.

The Moonshine comes out of the pipe at the bottom of the barrel, collected and bottled by just three machines!

The Bottling Department. All bottles are labelled by hand

These are the two products they produce at the minute.
LBL Moonshine received a SIP Award for excellence in 2013.
Have to take our word for it, it really is great. The other product is Apple Sin, which is a mix of Apple Cider and moonshine, soft smooth and sweet great over ice or on ice cream.
For our non U.S. readers this part of Kentucky is the Land Between the Lakes.

The Boss looks happy but no we had not tried the moonshine at this time. Unfortunately they don't have a license to serve or sell liquor in this area, we had to go to a liquor store about 5 miles away to buy the moonshine!

This is the storage area where they ferment the mash before distilling.

This is Spencer the Master Distiller.
We are very grateful to Spencer and Jay for making us feel so welcome and for producing great products. Thanks for the freebie Spencer.
He found a bottle with a 'torn' label, signed the bottle for us and gave us a shot glass to drink it with!!

Signed bottles by the master distillers are highly sought after

Back on the road through the Land between the Lakes

Main purpose of this part of the journey is to get to the liquor store to buy some moonshine!!

Mission accomplished!!!!!
